OUR TEAM

Founded in 2019, Team Taro is a rookie First Tech Challenge team. All 11 members are freshmen attending Santa Clara High School and are a part of the 49ers Stem Leadership Institute, sponsored by the 49ers, the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, Chevron, and the Santa Clara Unified School District. Our team was formed through our love of all the aspects of robotics. As a rookie team, we are excited to learn through all the struggles and experiences we will face as a team during our first season. The team itself is split up into three sub-teams: outreach, software, and hardware. All sub-teams work together to produce a final product and are lead by elected sub-group leaders and our team coach, Mr. Cairel.

HARDWARE

Our hardware sub-group is made up of six members: Arnav, Austin, Avi, James, Raiyaan, and Xavier. The sub-group team is led by team leaders Austin, Xavier, the sub-group mentor Akash, and our coach Mr. Cairel. They are in charge of designing and building the team's robot. For the 2019-2020 season, our robot uses mecanum wheels, that allows the robot to move 360 degrees, turn and strafe. We chose this design since it efficient, and it can do every task on the game board. Our flywheels uses a special gear ration, to have enough torque to take the block. We have 2 linear slides that provide stability and strength to lift a skystone block.

SOFTWARE

Our software team consists of 3 members: Sahana, Kavi, and Kaushik. The sub- team currently no one since the former leader, Kavi, has devoted most of her time to outreach. The members currently are led by our team mentor, Akash, and Kavi's dad, Mr. Nataraja. Our software team is in charge of writing the code for the robot to run during the two portions of the robot game: tele-op and autonomous period. Each individual task completed contributes to the overall points. In the autonomous period, code is incredibly important as that is the only thing the robot runs on. Our code uses computer vision to detect the sky stones and uses encoders to move them over to the other side. Then our robot will park on the center tape. For our teleop code, we are in charge of writing all the code to connect the gamepad controllers to the robot. We also added extra features such as slow mode.

OUTREACH

Our outreach sub-group is made up of all the girls on our team: Kaitlyn, Ein, Kavi, and Sahana. The sub-group is led by Kaitlyn, our robotics teacher, Mr. Tan, and our team mentor, Akash. Outreach focuses on the financial and community portion of First Tech Challenge. We contact many local businesses for sponsorships and plan fundraisers to raise money for our team to cover all of the team expenses during the season. The other half of outreach is team's involvement within our community and spreading our knowledge about FIRST, robotics, and stem in general.
